This series introduces the chemistry, biology, and science history of oxygen in a lively, captivating format, while conveying and reinforcing rigorous content through informative, humorous graphics and songs. Lesson 1 covers the chemistry of oxygen, beginning with the composition and function of the atmosphere, the historic experiments of the 17th and 18th centuries that led to the discovery of oxygen, covalent and ionic bonding, and the modern manufacture of oxygen. Lesson 2 explores the biology of oxygen via human respiration and circulation. It also explains the effects of low oxygen at high altitudes, comparing them to oxygen deprivation due to heart and lung disease, as well as human and animal adaptation to low-oxygen environments.(© 1999)
