History Matters     303.6

Grades 9-12     15 Minutes/1 Lesson
Rights: Unlimited

This lesson helps high school students understand the value of learning from the past to make decisions today. Students see a real-life example of people using their knowledge of the past while struggling with a major, pre-sent-day financial decision. The lesson is taught using the story of a high school student faced with a decision to spend his life's savings on a car, or to use the money to help his mother and grandfather modernize the family farm. In the end, he makes his decision based on his family's successes and mistakes. Weighing all information carefully, the boy decides to contribute to the business that has been his family's livelihood. By witnessing the conflict faced by a member of their peer group, students learn that giving up short-term gains is sometimes necessary to reach long-term goals. (© 1987)
